A Reddit user has raised concerns about the influx of Indian students pursuing Master’s degrees in US universities. The 26-year-old woman, born and brought up in the US, who is herself pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science, shared her observations from her experience at an American university. She noted that the majority of students in her program were Indian, a trend which she found surprising, considering it is not a famous university.
“I decided to use my employee benefit to get my masters in CS. I immediately realized that the students in the program were 99% Indian. Which is obviously pretty rare in a US school to have that many non-American students,” she wrote.
US degree gateway to American Dream
Many of these students, the woman observed, view a US degree as a gateway to job opportunities and work visas in the country. However, she questioned the feasibility of this plan, given the highly competitive job market, even for American graduates.
“I think this is kind of a scam …”
The Reddit user also highlighted the financial burden these students shoulder, often taking on significant debt for a degree that may not lead to the desired outcomes. “Anyway from my observations I think this is kind of a scam these Indian kids are falling victim to. They are coming here going into debt, the professors aren’t even good, and they probably won’t be able to get a job in the us. I feel bad for them honestly,” she added.
Additionally, she noted cultural differences in classroom behavior, which can sometimes lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. “The other thing is the Indian kids have brutal classroom etiquette like they are LOUDLY talking while the professor is, which would never ever be tolerated in a typical American classroom,” she wrote.
